Father of JonBenet Ramsey seeks new Colorado law for reviewing unsolved cases

John Ramsey’s Push for Family Rights in Unsolved Murder Cases

John Ramsey, father of Jonbenet Ramsey, who was only six years old when she was tragically murdered, has launched a new petition aimed at Colorado lawmakers. He believes families deserve more support when law enforcement efforts fall short in pursuing justice for their loved ones.

Speaking at the Crimicon 2025 conference in Denver, Ramsey urged the Colorado Legislature to align state laws governing family rights for murder victims with federal standards. “It’s about fairness,” he stated, emphasizing that families shouldn’t have to rely on media spotlight to seek justice.

Interestingly, recent documents indicate that DNA evidence from the early days of the Jonbenet case did not match key individuals involved.

Currently, federal law doesn’t extend to state or local investigations. Ramsey has proposed that Colorado implement its own regulations allowing families to request case reviews if they remain unresolved for over three years. These reviews would involve new investigators, distinct from the original team, to reassess using advanced DNA technology.

This process would require transparency, accountability, and set deadlines. If a case continues to be unresolved, families could then ask for another review within five years, barring any new evidence that could emerge sooner.

Ramsey shared the stage at the conference with investigative journalist Paula Woodward, author of “We Have Your Daughter,” both of whom have been vocal about the mishandling of Jonbenet’s case by the Boulder police.

Interestingly, the petition was initiated by Lura Vernon, a former aerospace engineer who felt compelled to act after hearing Ramsey speak at a previous conference. “I followed this incident from the start and have a daughter about Jonbenet’s age,” she explained. “This petition seemed like the right way to contribute.” Ramsey has been attending such events for years, advocating for the use of independent agencies to conduct up-to-date DNA testing on evidence from his daughter’s unsolved murder.

Jonbenet was reported missing by her mother on December 26, 1996, and later found dead by Ramsey in their home. The autopsy revealed she died due to strangulation and head trauma. Over the years, Ramsey has openly criticized the Boulder Police Department for their handling of the investigation, though he recently expressed a renewed sense of hope after meeting with new leadership there.

Ramsey mentioned, “I hope this new leadership will commit to seeking external help to resolve this case until proven otherwise.” Authorities continue to encourage anyone with information about the ongoing investigation to reach out through designated contact points.
