Tragic Case of Penelope Sokolowski
Penelope Sokolowski, just 16 years old, tragically took her own life in February of last year. Her father, Jason, believes this heartbreaking event resulted from a grooming process that started on Roblox, a popular gaming platform with around 170,000 young users under 13.
“We thought we had everything covered,” Jason recounted, noting that they had taken precautions, including using an external app to monitor Penelope’s online interactions.
Jason claims Penelope was contacted by an online predator who pressured her to carve his name onto her chest and send disturbing videos of self-harm, which ultimately contributed to her tragic death.
Many children, including Penelope, started using Roblox as young as 7 or 8, enjoying the freedom to explore a virtual world and chat with others.
Reflecting on their time together, he mentioned, “I went into the room, saw what she was doing, and asked her about these friends she made.” At first, he felt a sense of relief. “As a father, I thought, oh, this is sweet; she’s artistic and has made friends,” he added. Yet, he realized he didn’t fully grasp the impact Roblox had on her.
Working in the film industry in Vancouver, Jason separated from Penelope’s mother when she was 13. He began to see changes in her behavior as her grades dropped. By the age of 14, he noticed a scar on her arm, hidden beneath a bracelet and loose clothing.
Penelope eventually confided that she had found a self-harm group through Roblox but reassured her dad that she had moved beyond it.
However, following her 16th birthday, Penelope took her life. In the aftermath, Jason checked her phone and discovered what he described as a “crime scene,” revealing two years of messages with someone who encouraged her to act against herself. He suspects this person connected with her via Roblox and later switched to Discord for private chats, some lasting hours.
In alarming exchanges, Penelope shared graphic images and discussions tied to self-harm. One particularly upsetting moment involved her expressing concerns about not being able to cut “too deep.” In another message, she showed a tattoo linked to a violent online group known as 764, which the FBI has identified as targeting minors and promoting severe self-harm.
Jason expressed his dismay, stating, “They groom girls to do whatever they can, and I think [Penelope] was brainwashed the entire time.” It’s been two decades since Roblox was established, and many families assert it makes it too easy for predators to find their children.
Multiple lawsuits against Roblox have been consolidated, with the first hearing taking place in January 2023. Attorney Matt Dolman, representing the plaintiffs, remarked on the oddity of adults being able to communicate with children online, especially in a gaming landscape.
Dolman explained that predators often initiate contact through Roblox and then transition conversations to messaging apps. Discord is mentioned in numerous lawsuits, alongside Snapchat and Meta, though the latter two did not comment on the matter.
In response to the rising concerns, Roblox announced additional safety measures to prevent children from encountering adult predators, including AI tools for age estimation. However, some remain skeptical about the effectiveness of these developments.
Jason Sokolowski criticizes big tech companies, asserting they fail to prioritize the safety of children. “They protect these predators because they share the same motivations—money and power,” he said. “There’s so much that could be done to improve safety overnight.”
