A man from Arizona, Sean Ryan Grell, took his 2-year-old daughter out under the pretense of seeing Christmas lights. Unfortunately, he led her to the desert where he committed an unthinkable act by setting her on fire. He spent 26 years in prison before passing away at the age of 50 on April 19, found at a Tucson prison facility. The circumstances surrounding his death have not been disclosed.
The Arizona Department of Correction, Rehabilitation and Re-entry announced that all inmate deaths are investigated in collaboration with the county prosecutor’s office. As of now, the Pima County Medical Examiner’s Office has not provided any comments on the situation.
The case, described as “terrifying” by the Arizona Supreme Court, involved Grell picking up his daughter, Kristen Salem, from a daycare on December 2, 1999. Initially, he took her to McDonald’s, claiming they were going to see Christmas lights, but instead, they headed to Target to buy gas and supplies. Court documents revealed that he then drove her to an isolated desert area, laid her down, and tragically set her on fire.
Little Kristen awakened while engulfed in flames, managing to run a few feet before collapsing. After this horrific act, Grell went to a nearby store to buy beer, telling the clerk about seeing teenagers harming dogs in an empty lot. Hours later, he turned himself in and confessed to the crime during a press conference, stating with a chilling absence of emotion, “I took some gas and poured it over her.”
The court deemed this act particularly violent and cruel, charging Grell with first-degree murder and sentencing him to death. However, in 2013, the Arizona Supreme Court overruled this sentence, citing a 2002 Supreme Court decision that deemed it unconstitutional to execute individuals with intellectual disabilities. Grell’s lawyers argued that his low IQ and other evaluations showed he met the criteria set by the Supreme Court in a landmark ruling.
