Context of Small Gatherings Amid Pandemic Concerns
During a time when “small family gatherings” were widely criticized, schools and businesses closed, and access to loved ones was restricted, it’s interesting to consider the activities of prominent figures like Jake Tapper and Anthony Fauci.
Back on October 14, 2020, a report from CNN highlighted the risks associated with “small family gatherings.” Dr. Robert Redfield, the CDC director, expressed serious concerns during a conference call with governors. He emphasized the growing risk of virus transmission at small gatherings, especially with Thanksgiving approaching.
According to reports from places like Vermont and Delaware, community spread was notably occurring at these gatherings where people often neglected mask-wearing and social distancing. The need for reinforcing these health measures was highlighted, particularly as people faced “fatigue” in adhering to guidelines.
On the same day, Tapper’s show focused on urging viewers to steer clear of indoor small gatherings. This message was echoed by experts from Harvard University. Amidst these warnings, Tapper criticized President Trump for advocating for the economy’s reopening, drawing stark comparisons to “mass murder” due to the pandemic’s potential toll.
Nick Watt, a CNN correspondent, emphasized that while precautions existed in public, the spread was notably happening in family settings. He reiterated the CDC’s caution for gatherings during Thanksgiving.
Meanwhile, in a call with reporters, officials from the Trump administration seemed to be reconsidering their stance, hinting at a belief in “herd immunity” as a viable strategy. Tapper responded by questioning the ethics of such an approach, comparing it to “mass murder.” Sisi Jha from Harvard criticized the idea, labeling it a terrible policy that could lead to unnecessary deaths.
Later, Tapper posed the question, “How can we return to normal while keeping people safe?” Dr. Ashish Jha, responding, noted the pandemic’s severity, indicating that it wouldn’t be possible to return to pre-pandemic normalcy quickly. He suggested that following basic precautions could reclaim a majority of normal life, while remaining hopeful for a vaccine in early 2021.
Fauci, offering his perspective in mid-October, advised caution for the upcoming Thanksgiving gatherings, stressing that individuals should carefully assess their risk factors and potentially forgo social events to protect vulnerable family members.
Interestingly, just a week later, Fauci documented a dinner he had with the Tappers. He noted how Jake Tapper held strong opinions against Trump amid rising infection rates, reflecting on his experience of enjoying personal time together despite the ongoing health crisis.
Fauci later warned that gatherings posed risks, especially when individuals let their guard down by removing masks for eating or drinking. This awareness was crucial as they engaged in discussions about the pandemic.
This gathering was not their first; Fauci had previously dined with the Tappers in July. Reflecting on that interaction, he recalled their friendship fondly and mentioned the precautions taken during the dinner.
Looking ahead, one might speculate that Tapper’s career will remain intact, with ongoing relations between him and the Republican party continuing despite political divides.
