FBI Captures Three Escapees from Newark ICE Facility

In Newark, New Jersey, FBI officials have recaptured three out of four individuals who escaped from a private detention facility known as Delaney Hall. The escape occurred on the evening of June 12, prompting a response from the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), which labeled these individuals as a “public safety threat.”

Authorities have managed to apprehend Franklin Norberto Bautista Reyes, Joel Enrique Sandoval Lopez, and Joan Sebastian Castaneda-Rozada. However, Andres Felipe Pineda Mogoron remains at large. All three captured individuals, who were living in the U.S. illegally, hail from Honduras, while Pineda Mogoron was born in Colombia. The FBI is offering a reward of up to $25,000 for any information leading to his capture.

Earlier in the week, a $10,000 reward was also announced by authorities for tips regarding the escapees. Pineda Mogoron had entered the U.S. in 2023 and overstayed his tourist visa. He has faced prior arrests, including one in New York City for theft.

Bautista Reyes entered the U.S. in 2021 and was arrested for a string of serious offenses, including aggravated assault and possession of a weapon aimed at illegal purposes. Sandoval Lopez, who came to the U.S. as a minor in 2019, also has a criminal history, including illegal gun possession and assault.

Castaneda Rozada, who arrived in 2022, has been linked to robbery and conspiracy charges. The escape sparked protests at the Delaney Hall facility, with reports of dissatisfaction among detainees regarding food services leading to unrest.

Mustafa Setin, an immigration lawyer, shared that about 50 detainees had actually forced down walls in their dorm after frustrations grew over delayed food. “Some of them became quite aggressive,” Setin mentioned.

On June 12, protesters also blocked entry that evening, voicing their opposition to detention policies and calling for accountability.

According to DHS, the facility provides various services round-the-clock, including medical care, access to legal resources, and specialized dietary options. The situation remains tense as authorities continue their efforts to maintain order.
