FBI criticizes Gov. Hochul after she calls the investigation into Suffolk Democrat Chairman Rich Schaffer a 'political hit job'

FBI and Hochul Clash Over Investigation Comments

The FBI has criticized New York Governor Kathy Hochul after she referred to an investigation into a Democratic Party leader as a “political hit job.” This came despite the fact that both state and local authorities were collaborating with the FBI on the case.

The investigation targets Rich Schaffer, the Suffolk County Party Chairman, due to allegations of vote-buying, financial incentives, and political intimidation during his election campaign this year.

In a recent conversation regarding the FBI’s investigation, Hochul pointed to President Donald Trump, insisting that any actions taken just before an election were intentionally political in nature, even though the claims against Schaffer originated from within his own party.

“Anything coming out of the Trump administration days before an election… is calculated as a political hit job,” Hochul stated.

In response, the FBI labeled her comments as “irresponsible,” suggesting that she was engaging in partisan tactics to gain political leverage as Election Day approaches on November 3.

“It’s irresponsible to comment on joint state and federal investigations during the election campaign to score political points,” an FBI representative told The New York Post. “It undermines the integrity of the investigative process and hurts the candidates running for office.”

This public disagreement with the Democratic governor marks the FBI’s first acknowledgment of the investigation concerning Schaffer, who has firmly denied the allegations, calling them “baseless.”

As Hochul seeks reelection for another term, she faces a challenge from Republican Bruce Blakeman, who is currently serving as the Nassau County executive.
