FBI, DHS warn of potential repeat attacks and retaliation after Trump assassination attempt

A joint intelligence bulletin released this week by the FBI and Department of Homeland Security following Saturday’s shooting of former President Trump warned of possible renewed attacks and retaliation, Fox News has learned.

The four-page bulletin, first reported by Politico, said violent extremists and others “may seek additional or retaliatory acts of violence” in retaliation for the assassination attempt on President Trump, the outlet reported.

Fox News has not independently verified the bulletin, but an FBI source told Fox, “We continue to face a very real threat from those seeking to disrupt our election. The FBI remains vigilant in its efforts to detect and assess possible threats, and as always, we urge the public to promptly report any suspicious activity that may pose a threat to public safety.”

The intelligence bulletin said extremists had carried out or planned attacks against “perceived political or ideological opponents” and was shared with multiple intelligence and law enforcement agencies, Politico reported.

While no specific targets are mentioned, it is not uncommon and common for bulletins to be issued to remind people to remain vigilant.

“The FBI and Department of Homeland Security remain concerned about the possibility of violence or retaliation following this attack, particularly given that individuals in some online communities have threatened, encouraged, or spoken about violent acts in response to the assassination attempt,” the bulletin, reported by Politico, read in part.

“This attack confirms our assessment that election-related targets are under threat of attacks and other disruptive incidents,” Politico reported.

President Trump was shot at a campaign rally in Pennsylvania on Saturday by a lone gunman, identified as 20-year-old Thomas Matthew Crooks, who was struck by a bullet in the ear.

One of the victims, Corey Comperatore, was shot and killed, and two others, David Duch, 57, of New Kensington, Pennsylvania, and James Copenhaver, 74, of Moon Township, Pennsylvania, were injured. Both are currently in stable condition.

Trump is currently in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. The Republican National Committee has nominated him as its presidential candidate, with Republican Senator J.D. Vance of Ohio as his running mate.

The FBI said Sunday that it had not yet determined a motive for the attack but was investigating the assassination attempt as a possible act of terrorism.

The bulletin comes as FBI Director Christopher Wray has repeatedly warned about an “elevated threat environment” regarding terrorism, focusing on dangerous individuals crossing the southern border.
