FBI files charges against 35 individuals in West Virginia drug scheme and starts summer crime initiative

FBI Charges 35 Individuals in Drug and Firearm Offenses

On Tuesday, the FBI revealed that 35 individuals are facing charges related to drug and firearm violations following an extensive year-long investigation in West Virginia. This initiative coincides with wider national summer crime-fighting efforts.

According to the FBI, both the Pittsburgh and Baltimore divisions collaborated with the Eastern Panhandle Drug and Violent Crime Task Force to kick off Operation Turf War in early 2025.

The operation has led to the confiscation of illegal guns and narcotics, as well as funds purportedly allocated to support violent criminal activities. “Operation Turf War is the FBI’s answer to communities that require urgent assistance,” stated FBI Director Kash Patel.

“This was a highly successful operation in West Virginia, utilizing advanced technology, confidential informants, and precise coordination to apprehend nearly 30 suspects,” Patel mentioned, highlighting the importance of partnerships with local law enforcement agencies, including the Martinsburg and Jefferson County SWAT teams, as well as Homeland Security Investigations SWAT.

The FBI also announced the launch of Operation Summer Heat 2.0, which expands upon last year’s mission led by former Deputy Director Dan Bongino. This previous effort resulted in close to 9,000 arrests across the country.

This year’s campaign will run through September 20, focusing on collaborations with state and local law enforcement to tackle violent crime. Patel emphasized, “Over the next 95 days, we will replicate this initiative nationwide, building on last year’s successes. We’re just getting started.”

As part of Operation Summer Heat last year, the FBI reported over 8,600 arrests, nearly 7,750 searches, and the recovery of 2,280 firearms and upwards of 44,560 kilograms of cocaine.

This year, the operation aims to operate on an even larger scale, further amplifying efforts to identify and arrest violent offenders in collaboration with various federal, state, and local partners.
