An undocumented immigrant was shot and killed in Houston after he tried to run over an Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officer during a recent operation, as reported by the agency on Tuesday.
According to an ICE spokesperson, agents were attempting to pull over Lorenzo Salgado Araujo, a Mexican national, around 6:50 a.m. when he decided to flee. During this attempt, he reportedly used his vehicle to try to hit one of the officers, prompting the officer to fire in self-defense.
Araujo was taken to a hospital with injuries and unfortunately, later passed away. The FBI is now investigating the incident.
Previously, on July 1, ICE agents had opened fire on another undocumented immigrant who similarly attempted to ram his vehicle into officials.
During a separate engagement, a Mexican national named Clemente Lara Hernandez tried to escape custody by driving against traffic on a one-way street, eventually colliding with another vehicle. Officers fired their weapons, though no injuries were reported, and Lara Hernandez remains at large.
ICE has stated that, amid rising dangers, assaults on their officers have surged significantly, with vehicle attacks increasing by over 3,300 percent and death threats rising more than 8,000 percent. This highlights the risks currently faced by law enforcement in the field.
