FBI searches Michigan residence following Ayman Mohamad Ghazali's assault on synagogue

FBI Investigates Michigan Synagogue Incident

On Thursday night, armed FBI agents carried out a search warrant at a residence in Michigan linked to a suspect involved in an attack on a synagogue earlier that day.

Video footage captured officers using a percussion tool to break a window of a brick home in Dearborn Heights before they entered. This operation happened just hours after a man drove a vehicle into Temple Israel, a prominent Reform synagogue in West Bloomfield, around 12:20 p.m.

The suspect, identified as Ayman Mohammad Ghazali, 41, allegedly entered the synagogue, firing at security personnel with a rifle. The guards returned fire, resulting in Ghazali’s death.

During the chaos, a vehicle caught fire, and the building filled with smoke. Fortunately, all staff and approximately 140 students were safely evacuated. The cause of the fire is still being investigated.

Authorities discovered chemicals in the suspect’s truck, suggesting there could be explosives, although the exact nature of these substances remains undisclosed.

White House press secretary Caroline Levitt confirmed that President Trump was briefed on the shooting. The investigation involves both FBI agents and officials from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives.

Meanwhile, at least eight first responders received treatment for various issues at local hospitals. Oakland County Sheriff Michael Bouchard reported that one security guard was struck by the suspect’s vehicle, and around 30 officers were treated for smoke inhalation after they entered the building.

Dearborn Heights’ mayor took to social media, sharing that Ghazali had reportedly lost many family members in an Israeli attack on his home in Lebanon just earlier this month. “We learned the individual responsible for the incident at Temple Israel was a resident here,” Mayor Mo Beydoun noted.

Authorities revealed that Ghazali entered the United States about 15 years ago under a spousal visa and gained U.S. citizenship in 2016. He was born in Lebanon in 1985 and had entered through Detroit Metropolitan International Airport on a family immigrant visa.

Local reports indicate that Ghazali was employed in Dearborn Heights. The incident has raised concerns, and community leaders, including the mayor, have urged residents to remain alert, especially as they gather during the holy days of Ramadan.
