The Federal Bureau of Investigation held its first press conference regarding the alleged assassination attempt on former President Donald Trump. Unfortunately, the FBI provided very little relevant information about the assassination attempt, and the intelligence agency also admitted that it had no knowledge of “any specific threat intelligence” regarding the shooting of the Republican presidential candidate.
Hours after the incident, the FBI declared it was taking on “the lead federal law enforcement role in the investigation into the incident involving former President Donald Trump that occurred early today in Butler, Pennsylvania.”
But the leading intelligence agency revealed very little in its first press conference on the alleged assassination of former President Trump.
“An assassination attempt occurred this evening against former President Donald Trump. The crime scene remains active,” the FBI said in a statement.
After his hospitalization, further details were not available.
The FBI did not release the name of the shooter, a motive or the weapon the suspect used.
Kevin Rojek, special agent in charge of the FBI’s Pittsburgh field office, acknowledged that “from the FBI’s perspective, there was no specific threat information related to this incident.”
Rojek said authorities are “working hard to determine who committed this crime and the motive for why this was done.”
Rojek added, “The identification is almost complete. Once we are 100 percent sure who the person is, we will make an announcement to the press. However, at this point we do not have a motive.”
“We think that video and photos will be very helpful, and also anyone who has specific information about the shooter, once he is identified, will be very helpful,” the FBI said at a news conference Saturday, “and also to help determine a motive. And as I said, we certainly do not believe this was a lone-actor attack, so at this point where our investigation is currently focused, we will be seeking further information and pointing out any other individuals who may have been involved in this incident.”
The suspect was reportedly shot dead by Secret Service personnel, but one protester was killed and two others seriously injured. Authorities said the identities of the shooting victims would not be released until their next of kin have been notified.
Photos showed former President Trump hiding as gunfire rang out, before emerging defiantly, face bloodied and fists raised, as Secret Service agents secured him and he was escorted off the stage as the rally descended into chaos.
Regarding the former president’s condition, Trump campaign spokesman Steven Chang said, “President Trump thanks the police and emergency responders who acted swiftly during this heinous incident. He is in good spirits and is being examined at a local medical facility.”
Law enforcement officials are asking for the public’s assistance with any further information regarding the attempted assassination of President Trump.
