FCC Chair Criticizes Senator Over Sinclair’s Kimmel Ban

Commission Chairman Brendan Kerr had a strong rebuttal for California Democratic Senator Scott Wiener on Tuesday, urging Sinclair Broadcast Group to end their current stance that keeps late-night host Jimmy Kimmel off air on his affiliated stations.

Kerr highlighted Wiener’s position as part of a broader trend where Democrats accuse each other of stifling discourse. In a post on X, he remarked, “In Kimmel, Democrats are just projections and distortions,” in response to a statement from Wiener.

Community Concerns Amid Kimmel’s Suspension

The Progressive State Assembly expressed outrage over Sinclair’s decision to not air “Jimmy Kimmel Live!” due to Kimmel’s remarks about Charlie Kirk’s alleged ties. Sinclair’s announcement followed Disney’s temporary halt of Kimmel’s show, which had resumed just days later.

“As of Tuesday night, Sinclair will be off scheduling Kimmel’s show,” they indicated, replacing it with discussions about ABC’s potential programming changes.

Nexstar Media Group, which also owns several ABC affiliates, confirmed they would continue airing Kimmel’s show.

This suspension ignited frustration among many liberals, who characterized it as a breach of free speech. Critics pointed to Kerr’s previous podcast comments, suggesting that if Disney didn’t intervene, regulatory actions might follow. Senator Ted Cruz from Texas has been vocal in his criticism, likening the FCC’s stance to a mob-like intimidation.

Wiener Reaches Out to Sinclair

Amid Sinclair’s refusal to let Kimmel back on air, Wiener seemed to warn of potential government actions against the company, saying, “I can’t wait to break Sinclair. Corporate media integration undermines democracy.” His comments included criticism of former President Trump, claiming attempts were made to coerce the media.

Kerr shot back, interpreting Wiener’s comments as indicative of a willingness among some Democrats to utilize governmental power against their adversaries. He added that the focus on Kimmel’s suspension distracts from the real issues surrounding decisions made by Disney and local stations. “It’s clear that these companies believe this suspension is justified,” he noted.

Local vs. National Media Dynamics

Kerr praised Sinclair for their pushback against Disney, saying this was a significant moment for local television stations, which he believes hold a greater public responsibility. “Local stations should have the autonomy to cater to community needs,” he argued.

In a reply to Kerr, Wiener’s representatives pointedly referenced the implications of Kerr’s earlier statements. “The Democrats are the ones attempting to silence free speech,” they asserted, questioning Kerr’s logical consistency.

Sinclair has yet to offer any commentary concerning these developments.
