FDA gives the green light to Teal Wand — the first at-home test for cervical cancer screening

The FDA has given the green light for the first at-home screening for cervical cancer, developed by Teal Health. This new option provides an alternative to the traditional Pap smear, which typically requires a visit to a healthcare provider.

Since its introduction 80 years ago, the Pap smear has played a crucial role in reducing cervical cancer rates. Still, many women might find the clinical setting uncomfortable, and that’s where this new test aims to help.

Teal Health’s approval was supported by a study involving over 600 women who used self-collected samples with the new device.

Kara Egan, co-founder and CEO of Teal, explained that this approval not only showcases innovative products but also empowers women to screen in a way that fits more comfortably into their lives. Doing it at home could be a game-changer, really.

According to the CDC, about 11,500 new cervical cancer cases are diagnosed annually in the U.S., with approximately 4,000 resulting in death.

Similar to Roche’s Cobas HPV test, the Teal Wand detects human papillomavirus (HPV), which is responsible for nearly all cervical cancers. But the difference is, with the Teal Wand, women can collect samples at home and send them to certified labs, in contrast to Roche’s tests which are meant for clinical use.

While Teal Health hasn’t revealed the cost of the test yet, they’re currently working on securing insurance coverage and more flexible payment opportunities for users.

Egan also referenced another home testing option called Coroguard, which is used for colon cancer detection. It’s interesting to note that, although CoroGard is typically covered by most insurance plans, it can cost about $600 out-of-pocket, but Teal is aiming for a more affordable option.

Teal Health anticipates rolling out the testing kits in June for women aged 25 to 65.
