A fearless Queens mother took action when a suspected stalker tried to kidnap her teenage daughter from her Astoria apartment, according to police and shocking video footage.
A doorbell camera captured the courageous moment Adriana Alvarez chased down a deli worker who was said to be obsessed with her 18-year-old daughter, Rex, as she violently dragged her down the stairs.
Dramatic video shows how the nightmare unfolded just after 9 a.m. on Jan. 23, when Rex was in a fourth-floor apartment on 43rd Street after a morning walk with his two dogs. He is seen returning to his apartment. Suddenly, a masked man wearing a camouflage jacket, later identified by police as George Vasiliu, 25, emerged from the stairs where he had been ambushed.
Mr. Vasiliu, wearing black gloves, grabbed Rex’s shoulders and began to drag the girl down the stairs and out of frame. Alvarez is then seen running out into the hallway and down the stairs.
“I’ve never heard my daughter scream like that,” Alvarez, 35, told the Post. She said: “I thought the dog might have run downstairs, but when I came outside I saw her daughter being dragged away.
“I never imagined something like this would happen to me, especially in my building. It was awful.”
A life-or-death struggle ensued across four flights of stairs as the ferocious 5-foot-4, 130-pound mother exchanged blows with the large, well-armed 6-foot-2, 230-pound Basiliu.
Her punches had little effect and he continued to drag Rex down the stairs towards the entrance of the building. She said Vasiliu punched her in the face, then took out her pepper spray and used it on both women.
Alvarez, who suffered a dislocated shoulder, a fractured orbital socket and a fractured elbow in the intense fight, remained undaunted. Although she could not see clearly, she continued to struggle with Vasilyu and asked for her help.
“When we reached the first floor, a neighbor who heard our screams came out with a stick and started beating him,” she said. “What I saw was [apartment] The door was open, so I pushed my daughter inside. ”
Vasilyu blocked the door from closing with one foot and began grabbing the girl again.
“When I tried to push his legs out, he grabbed my hair and pulled me in.” [the building’s] It’s the vestibule,” Alvarez recalled. He then allegedly stomped on Alvarez’s back several times.
In the end, mother and daughter managed to escape from Vasilyu and ran outside. Alvarez ran onto the street and began banging on his neighbor’s window and yelling for someone to call 911. “The guy who lives next door ran outside and held him down until the police arrived,” Alvarez said.
Police said Vasiliu was charged with attempted kidnapping, assault, possession of a weapon, unlawful possession of a hazardous substance, harassment and violation of a protection order. He is being held at Rikers Island, and his bail is set at $50,000, according to jail records.
New York City police officials said Basiliu rented a car the night before the attempted kidnapping and parked it outside Alvarez’s building. Inside the car, officers recovered a bag containing rope, sleeping pills, melatonin and tampons. A knife was also found in one of his pockets, officials said.
“He had this all planned out,” Alvarez said. “Where was he going to take my baby?”
Alvarez said her daughter worked with Vasiliu at C-Town Supermarket on 34th Street in Astoria.
Rex, a cashier, befriends Vasiliu, who works in the deli department.
“They were genuine, easy to talk to and friendly,” she explained. “But he was acting a little strange. He was staring at her while she was putting her stuff in.” Eventually, Vasiliou asked Rex about a date. .
“She said no, so he quit his job and started stalking her,” Alvarez, an esthetician, claimed. “We took out a restraining order against her because he tried to grab her off the street twice before her incident happened.”
Police officials confirmed the two previous incidents.
