Cook Defends Against Trump’s Attempts to Remove Her from the Federal Reserve

Federal Reserve Governor Lisa Cook has criticized former Hunter Biden attorney Abbe Lowell, as he steps in to combat efforts by Trump to remove her from the Federal Reserve amid allegations of mortgage fraud.

Lowell, who is currently representing New York Attorney General Leticia James against similar accusations from the Trump administration, announced plans to file a lawsuit on Tuesday after Trump declared his intention to dismiss Cook “for cause.”

“President Trump has no authority to remove Federal Reserve Governor Lisa Cook,” Lowell contended in a statement.

He further asserted, “His attempt to fire her, based solely on referrals, lacks factual or legal basis.” He promised that a lawsuit would be forthcoming to challenge this “illegal activity.”

Lowell, who recently founded his own law practice in May after leaving the prestigious firm Winston & Strawn, is currently engaged in various high-profile cases.

Among his clients is Attorney Mark Zaid, who is advising an anonymous whistleblower connected to a 2019 telephone conversation between Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, which sparked significant controversy. Another client is former Homeland Security employee Miles Taylor, who lost his security clearance earlier this year after the Biden administration took office.

Lowell also represents former Justice Department prosecutors who were let go by the Trump administration following the Capitol riots on January 6, 2021. Additionally, he is involved with a New Jersey influencer facing allegations of a multi-million dollar investment fraud scheme.

In the past, Lowell defended Hunter Biden against charges related to firearms and tax issues. Biden was found guilty on various counts, ultimately pleading guilty to tax fraud before receiving a pardon from President Biden in December 2024.

Lowell’s clientele includes other notable figures, such as former Senator Bob Menendez and John Edwards, the 2004 Democratic vice presidential candidate.

During Trump’s initial term, Lowell was also legal counsel for Ivanka Trump and Jared Kushner amid investigations into alleged collusion with Russia.

Cook faces serious allegations regarding the falsification of bank documents and real estate records in order to secure favorable loan terms. Trump’s move to dismiss her follows a referral from Bill Pulte, the director of the federal housing finance agency, who accused her of these actions.

Pulte claimed that Cook designated an Atlanta condominium as her primary residence just two weeks after securing a loan for her Michigan home in July 2021.

A spokesperson for the Federal Reserve stated that Cook plans to challenge the accusations through her lawyer, seeking a judicial determination that would allow her to remain in her position.

“Congress stipulates that Federal Reserve governors serve fixed terms and can only be removed by the President for specified causes,” the spokesperson noted.

Lowell’s office has not responded to inquiries for additional comments.
