Federal Raids Target Fraud in Twin Cities
Federal authorities executed coordinated raids across the Twin Cities area early Tuesday morning as part of an extensive investigation into significant financial fraud. These enforcement actions spanned multiple locations in Minneapolis-St. Paul, marking a decisive move in a federal probe aimed at combating fraud.
While the identities of those under investigation remain undisclosed, officials have labeled the operation a critical advancement in efforts to tackle fraud in Minnesota.
“HSI engaged in court-authorized law enforcement operations in the Minneapolis/St. Paul area in coordination with various federal, state, and local law enforcement agencies,” stated Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) via social media.
The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) reiterated that HSI is focused on “widespread taxpayer fraud in Minnesota.”
“We will stop at nothing to end fraud against the American people,” added DHS.
The Trump administration is intensifying actions against financial fraud following the discovery of multiple schemes across the U.S., with notable cases surfacing in both Minnesota and California. To centralize enforcement efforts, President Trump recently established the Fraud Eradication Task Force, led by Vice President JD Vance.
In a complementary move, Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche announced the formation of a National Fraud Enforcement Unit within the Department of Justice in early April, reflecting a federal commitment to investigating and prosecuting large-scale fraud.
“The task force and the Department of Justice will relentlessly expose these fraudsters wherever they are hiding,” remarked the vice president about the raids.
Reports indicate that federal agents executed over 20 criminal search warrants targeting a network of child care facilities, most of which are Somali-owned. Officials stressed that the investigation centered solely on financial wrongdoing, avoiding any immigration-related enforcement.
Among the targeted locations was Quality Learning Center, which gained notoriety for alleged widespread fraud detailed in a December 2025 video by conservative journalist Nick Shirley.
In response to the federal actions, Minneapolis city officials clarified that local resources were not involved in the operations. They expressed understanding that such actions might generate anxiety in the community.
“We understand that federal actions in neighborhoods can cause fear among residents. We will continue to utilize city resources to support communities following Operation Metro Surge,” the city tweeted.
Operation Metro Surge, which focuses on immigration enforcement in the Twin Cities, has resulted in heightened police presence in the region. Governor Tim Walz acknowledged the gravity of the situation while noting that local officials distinguish these federal fraud investigations from immigration actions occurring at the same time.
“If you commit fraud in Minnesota, you will get caught. Joint investigations work, and public justice depends on it,” Walz stated.
However, Walz faced criticism for suggesting that the state’s actions contributed significantly to the success of the federal fraud investigation, which prompted a rebuttal from FBI Director Kash Patel. This public disagreement emphasizes the political tension surrounding the investigation, highlighting ongoing disputes over accountability for prior oversight failures that allowed such misconduct to flourish.
“The FBI and Department of Justice, in collaboration with our DHS partners, drafted and executed all search warrants today,” Patel tweeted, underscoring the federal role in the operation.
Walz’s comments attracted considerable attention online, receiving over a million views shortly after posting, along with swift backlash from conservative critics, who claimed that fraud incidents escalated during his administration and that the subsequent public outcry impacted his re-election campaign.
