Ambush at Dallas ICE Facility: A Troubling Incident

A shooting at a Dallas Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) facility ended tragically when a gunman killed one detainee and injured two others before taking his own life. Authorities are calling it a terrorist act intended to instill fear in law enforcement.

Nancy Larson, a U.S. attorney for the Northern District of Texas, mentioned during a press briefing that this incident marks the third violent attack or threat at the facility in four months. The shooter, identified as 29-year-old Joshua Yarn, reportedly fired from a rooftop, and it seems he acted alone.

Footage from around 3 a.m. shows Yarn driving with a large ladder, which investigators believe he used to access the roof of the facility.

Larson detailed the chaos that morning, noting, “Gunshots echoed throughout the building, shattering windows and hitting law enforcement vehicles. Tragically, one detainee was killed and two others are currently receiving medical treatment.”

Following the shooting, FBI officials quickly began securing the crime scene and executed several search warrants at Yarn’s residence. There, they discovered various handwritten notes.

“One of those notes explicitly states, ‘Yes, it was me,'” Larson confirmed, indicating that Yarn claimed responsibility. This assertion aligns with the current findings of the investigation.

Interestingly, the notes contained chilling plans targeting the ICE facility, with Yarn referring to staff in derogatory terms and expressing a desire to inflict maximum harm.

“It’s evident from these writings that he was aiming his attack at ICE agents and personnel,” Larson noted, highlighting the disturbing reality behind the tragic incident.

She indicated that Yarn’s goal was not just to hurt but to create a genuine sense of fear among ICE employees, hoping to disrupt their work and lives significantly.

Marcos Charles, the director of the ICE Field Office, added some context about the surveillance technology used by Yarn. He warned that such tracking applications, while intended to assist, could inadvertently put law enforcement members at risk.

Both Larson and Charles were clear in their messages: Yarn’s actions reflect a growing threat towards those in enforcement roles. “What he did is the very definition of terrorism,” Larson reiterated. She noted Yarn believed he had erased digital evidence that might link him to the crime.

Authorities confirmed the use of an 8mm rifle in the shooting, which Yarn obtained legally earlier this August. The investigation is ongoing, and while several multiple shots were reported, specifics on the count are being withheld as they gather more details.

This incident raises serious questions about safety and security for immigration enforcement personnel in the region.
