Federal judge rejects Trump’s latest bid to drop $83.3M E. Jean Carroll defamation ruling

A federal judge has upheld the verdict and $83.3 million in damages in the defamation case against author E. Jean Carroll, rejecting former President Trump’s recent attempt at a new trial.

in written opinionU.S. District Judge Lewis Kaplan said Trump’s claims are “baseless.”

“Mr. endangered,” Kaplan wrote.

In January, a jury ordered Carroll to pay $83.3 million after Kaplan found him liable for defamation. Last month, President Trump requested a new trial.

Carroll has accused the former president of sexual assault in the 1990s, prompting a statement from Trump.

Kaplan said in his opinion that the jury was entitled to find Trump’s conduct on social media highly reprehensible. He also said that Trump’s actions during her trial, including when he walked out of her closing argument, meant that Trump would not stop defaming her unless there was a “significant deterrent,” such as a fine. He said that the idea was justified.

“Rather than purely ‘defending’ Mr. Trump, Mr. “There was evidence that he had made multiple statements accusing her of being a liar, a liar, implying that she was too unattractive to sexually assault her, and threatening to ‘pay dearly’ if she spoke up.” threatened,” the judge wrote.

Roberta Kaplan, Carroll’s attorney, said in a statement that she was pleased with the judge’s decision but not surprised.

“As the court explained, given Donald Trump’s continued defamation of Carroll during the trial and his ‘hatred and hateful’ conduct in court, it is difficult to believe that It was entirely reasonable to award Jean Carroll $83 million in damages.” Contempt. [were] It’s on full display,” he said.
