Mark Wolf Resigns as Chief Judge Amid Misconduct Allegations

Mark Wolff stepped down from his role as chief judge of the Massachusetts District Court last November, following an investigation into allegations of misconduct. However, after some time, he rescinded his resignation, according to sources familiar with the matter.

Wolff, who was appointed back in 1985 by President Ronald Reagan, expressed his discontent with President Donald Trump in an op-ed last year, which outlined his motivations for leaving the bench. He explained, “My reason is simple: I can no longer tolerate being constrained by what judges can say in public or do outside of the courtroom. President Donald Trump is using the law for partisan purposes, targeting his opponents while shielding his friends and donors from accountability.” This sentiment marked a significant departure from his long-standing values within the judicial system.

He further elaborated, stating, “The White House’s attacks on the rule of law are so disturbing to me that I feel compelled to speak out. For me, silence can no longer be tolerated.” These comments reflect a deep concern over the erosion of judicial standards during his tenure.

A court order issued by Chief Judge David Barron of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the First Circuit on November 24, 2025, mentioned that a former law clerk had made allegations of misconduct against a district judge.

Baron reported conducting a limited investigation that included thorough interviews with judges and former clerks, as well as a review of various written documents. He mentioned that interviews were led by experienced individuals in the field. However, he ultimately stated, “events have intervened, and no further action on the complaint is necessary,” thus closing the case in accordance with the law.

Todd & Weld LLP’s website lists Wolff as a senior advisor. Fox News Digital reached out for his comments recently. Chief Judge Dennis J. Casper described Wolff’s service as “distinguished” over his more than four decades on the court.
