Federal Employee Arrested After Active Shooter Hoax at New Jersey Base
A federal employee was taken into custody on Tuesday after an “active shooter hoax” prompted the lockdown of McGuire-Dix-Lakehurst, New Jersey’s largest military base. U.S. Attorney Alina Haba confirmed the incident, noting that the individual is being held for “conveying misinformation” regarding a supposed co-shooter.
The base, one of the most significant military installations in the U.S., experienced lockdown measures earlier in the day. Personnel were urged to evacuate as authorities responded to the situation. The exact nature of the threat remains unclear.
Lockdown protocols were lifted just before noon, shortly after the alert was issued.
While Haba described the incident as a “suspicion of hoax,” she did not provide further details about the employee’s actions. It seems there’s a growing concern about the impact of such false alarms, especially given the troubling history of violence within military settings.
“This kind of pointless fear and confusion is not tolerated in my state,” Haba said, emphasizing a commitment to uphold the law against activities that create undue panic and undermine public trust.
The McGuire-Dix-Lakehurst joint base is a major military site that merges Air Force, Army, and Navy operations across 42,000 acres, accommodating over 42,000 service members, their families, and civilian staff. Located about 18 miles from Trenton and roughly 30 miles from Philadelphia, it plays a vital role in national defense.
The timing of the incident coincided with a meeting of U.S. military leaders at the Marine Corps Base in Quantico, Virginia, where Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth addressed ongoing challenges and recent violent occurrences at military facilities.
Just last month, an Army sergeant faced charges related to the shooting of five fellow soldiers at a Georgia base. The pattern of violence has sparked alarm, recalling past attacks, including the tragic 2009 shooting at Fort Hood, Texas, which claimed 13 lives.
