Feds deny protections for wolves in Rockies

In making this determination, the Agency: denied petition Wildlife conservation group lists animals under ESA in northern Rocky Mountains and western U.S.

The FWS said the decision to maintain the status quo was based on a comprehensive analysis that incorporated the best available data from federal, state and tribal sources.

After modeling various threats to wolves, including human mortality and disease, the agency concluded: Wolves are not endangered in the western United States.

Gray wolves are currently considered endangered under the ESA.

is considered endangered in Minnesota and under state jurisdiction in Idaho, Montana, Wyoming, eastern Oregon and parts of Washington, FWS said.

2,797 wolves
Distributed in at least 286 packs in seven states in the western United States.

“The size and wide distribution of this population Wolf resilience and redundancy in this area,” the FWS said in a statement.
