Hours after other body parts were found in a Long Island park, investigators accidentally discovered a woman’s head and are investigating whether the ruthless MS-13 gang may have been involved. Police and sources announced Friday.
The gruesome discovery occurred Thursday night as authorities were cleaning up the west side of Suthers Park in Babylon, after two legs and a left arm were found earlier in the day, police said.
Later in the evening, they found the dog’s corpse and the right arm, which belonged to a woman, “approximately 20 feet further into the woods from where the left arm had been.” [was found]It’s almost a straight line,” Suffolk County Detective Lt. Kevin Baylor told reporters.
Police sources said the man had tattoos all over his left arm and his fingertips were missing, likely making identification difficult.
Officials said if the man had a criminal history, the severed fingertip could hinder police identification.
Investigators hope the tattoos will be useful because many law enforcement agencies keep records of suspects’ ink, officials said.
Based on a preliminary investigation, police believe the other arm, leg and head all belong to the same woman, but “that will be determined through scientific testing and autopsy,” Byler said.
Officials also said police were looking into whether the gruesome discovery was the work of MS-13, which is known to be active in the area.
The first person to discover it, a female student walking to school with a group of friends, found her severed left arm discarded in some roadside bushes off Seagull Boulevard on the east side of the park around 8:40 a.m. I discovered it by chance. she said.
Byler told reporters Thursday that the girl called her father, who went to the scene and reported the gruesome discovery to police.
Police officials said Friday that none of the bodies appeared to have been left in the park for long.
Medical examiners with the coroner’s office examined the findings “on scene,” but a formal autopsy was underway Friday morning, Byler said.
“Preliminarily, it looks like it’s a matter of days, if not hours,” Beiler said.
Byler said there were no tattoos on the woman’s body.
Authorities said the investigation is being treated as a homicide.
