Indiana Quarterback Fernando Mendoza Shines After Rose Bowl Victory
In the realm of college football, few players embody genuine self-expression quite like Indiana’s quarterback, Fernando Mendoza, who also holds the Heisman Trophy. As a highly anticipated top-five pick in the upcoming NFL draft, Mendoza has captured the hearts of fans with his infectious enthusiasm and down-to-earth charm.
This was particularly evident after the Hoosiers’ dominating 38-3 win over Alabama in the Rose Bowl. During a post-game interview with ESPN, Mendoza found out his team would face Oregon State in the semifinals.
When discussing the Ducks, Mendoza noted, “This is the first time I’ve heard about Oregon State winning. I really get engrossed in the game.” He continued, “But Oregon State, they’re a solid Big Ten opponent. We played there before, and it’s tough to beat a team twice. Oregon State has Donte Moore, [head coach] Dan Lanning, and defensive coordinator [Tosh] Lupoi. It should be an exciting matchup because they’re real competitors.”
“I’m looking forward to playing some great football against them. Hats off to them. Now we need to focus on our game plan and watch film. They’re a formidable opponent,” he added.
The Hoosiers are set to clash with the Ducks in the Chick-fil-A Peach Bowl on January 9th, aiming for a chance to compete in the national championship game in Miami later this month.
In the game against Alabama, Mendoza was impressive, completing 14 of 16 passes for 192 yards and throwing three touchdowns. Over the season, he has become a standout figure in the Hoosiers’ football program, drawing admiration from fans, especially as Indiana’s reputation shifts from a basketball-centric school to a recognized football contender.
Now, Indiana is just two victories away from securing the program’s first national football championship, following its first Big Ten title since 1967, with Mendoza also earning the distinction of being the first Hoosier to win the Heisman Trophy.
