Current NFL Draft Predictions Favor Mendoza

A recurring theme in many of the latest NFL mock drafts is clear:

The Las Vegas Raiders have chosen quarterback Fernando Mendoza as their first overall pick.

A unique set of circumstances has emerged at the outset of the 2026 NFL Draft. The Raiders are in need of a quarterback, and analysts agree that this year’s quarterback class isn’t particularly strong. Mendoza, however, is coming off a remarkable season where he propelled Indiana to its first national championship and earned the Heisman Trophy.

In a media session in Indianapolis on Tuesday, Raiders general manager John Spytek hinted strongly that Mendoza is exactly the kind of player they want.

When asked about the traits of a franchise quarterback, Spytek’s description seemed to match Mendoza’s final year at Indiana perfectly.

“Yeah, a leader, tough as nails, someone who truly enjoys playing football, a dedicated preparer. Of course, they need to be able to throw well, but it’s more about someone who loves the game and gives everything,” Spytek explained. “It’s about teammates who are selfless, who put everything on the line for the team every game.”

Mendoza’s resilience, both on and off the field, is often cited as one of his standout qualities. It’s something he himself has discussed throughout the season.

For instance, Mendoza faced a serious hit early in the Big Ten title game against Ohio State but recovered and led his team to victory.

After that game, he humorously remarked, “It felt like being hit by a freight train with no brakes,” referencing his experience during the hit. He continued, “Did I break a rib or something? I felt deflated.”

Throughout the year, Mendoza has consistently highlighted the importance of toughness. After Indiana’s dramatic win over Penn State, he said, “Die for your brothers on that field.”

He understands that such toughness will be crucial as he transitions to the next level.

“I’m all about playing football, rough and tough. Let’s get physical,” Mendoza said, referring to the hit in the championship game. “I know the NFL is favoring a more offensive style, but as a quarterback and competitor, I’m all for going head-to-head. It was a solid hit.”

Another key moment from the title game against Miami showcased his commitment to his team.

With the championship at stake, Mendoza was willing to risk it all for his teammates.

Following the game, he and head coach Curt Cinetti discussed Mendoza’s performance.

“He may come off as all-American during interviews, but in the games, he fights like a warrior. He took some serious hits but kept pushing through,” Cinetti said. “Yes, some of the hits he took should have been called. But when they overstep, the refs need to recognize it,” he added.

“I can’t express enough how much his effort contributed to the team’s success that day,” Cinetti emphasized.

Mendoza also reflected on his willingness to put everything on the line for his teammates.

“In that moment, I took the drop. I didn’t cover it completely, but I trust my offensive line and the entire team. Everyone gave their all today. I did what was needed for my brothers,” he stated.

“Yeah, I know the coaches tease me about my running style, but when it’s fourth down, I have to give my all, no matter what. I’m ready to do that,” he concluded.

It seems Spytek has been paying attention to these qualities as well.
