Fernando Mendoza Shines at Pro Day, Set for NFL Draft
Fernando Mendoza demonstrated his potential to be the top choice in this month’s NFL Draft during his pro day on Wednesday, where representatives from all 32 NFL teams gathered in Bloomington, Indiana.
The former quarterback for the Hoosiers managed to connect on 53 out of 56 passes, starting with 23 consecutive completions, as reported by NFL Network. Interestingly, the only throw that didn’t find its mark was on a slightly miscalculated “go” route.
Mendoza seemed to capture the interest of the Raiders’ leadership, who sent a sizable contingent, including general manager Jon Spytek and head coach Clint Kubiak, to watch him perform. He expressed, “I feel like it went well. You know, quarterbacks come and go, and some have shorter professional careers than anticipated. But I wanted to ensure we showcased our skills for all 32 NFL teams, running routes that align with what we’re likely to see at the next level.”
His stellar season was marked not only by impressive on-field achievements but also a reputation for his down-to-earth persona off the field. He became the first Indiana player to win the Heisman Trophy while leading the program to its first football national championship. With an impressive completion rate of 72% and a record of 3,535 passing yards alongside 41 touchdowns, Mendoza has certainly made a strong case for himself.
Despite the accolades, he’s aware of the challenges ahead. “I’m just focused on being the best quarterback I can be this season. I realize that transitioning to the NFL means adapting to more snaps under center and the faster pace of the game. It’ll require extensive adjustments, and I’m eager to learn,” he noted.
So far, he’s faced the Raiders twice, who are in need of a turnaround after finishing the previous season with a dismal 3-14 record. The NFL Draft is set to commence on April 23rd at Acresure Stadium in Pittsburgh, and there’s no doubt Mendoza is a name to watch closely.
