Fernando Mendoza Is Choosing to Miss the NFL Draft to Spend Time with His Mom, Who Has MS

NFL Draft Highlights Absence of Esteemed Quarterback

As the NFL Draft begins tonight, one standout player won’t be in attendance. This top quarterback, regarded as the likely No. 1 overall pick, will not be walking across the stage.

Fernando Mendoza has just wrapped up an impressive national championship season and earned the prestigious Heisman Trophy. Yet, instead of celebrating in the spotlight, he has chosen to stay in Miami with his mother.

“Pittsburgh is an amazing opportunity and venue. I’m really excited to see everyone take the stage tonight; it’s a dream for many,” Mendoza said. “But, you know, my mom felt strongly about doing this at home, and honestly, so did my parents. It’s just simpler for us, especially given our family situation.”

He added, “I have a flight the next morning, so traveling is so much easier from home. I wanted to create memories with those who’ve supported me through my journey—coaches, family, friends—rather than just with a small group in Pittsburgh.”

Mendoza’s mother, Elsa, who lives with multiple sclerosis and uses a wheelchair, has been a significant part of his journey. After he won the Heisman, he expressed his gratitude, telling her, “This trophy is ours. You’re my biggest fan, my light, and my reason. You’ve always backed me up.”

“Your sacrifice and love are my guiding principles. You taught me that real strength doesn’t always shout; sometimes it’s quiet resolve. It’s about choosing hope and believing in yourself, even when the world may not support you. Together, we’re challenging expectations. I love you,” he said.

In response to her son’s speech, Elsa wrote a heartfelt letter celebrating his success, revealing how closely intertwined their journeys have been, particularly with her battle against multiple sclerosis. “Your journey and mine have been connected deeply, especially with my illness,” she shared in a letter published in a newspaper.

She discussed how she had kept details of her condition hidden to protect her children but acknowledged that her struggles became more evident after contracting coronavirus five years ago. “After I got COVID, things took a turn for the worse, and hiding it was no longer possible,” she wrote.

Elsa credited Fernando with easing her struggles, saying, “You made everything so much simpler in the most gentle yet strong way. You never made me feel ashamed; rather, you always treated me with love and support, no matter the situation.”

As for the draft, the Las Vegas Raiders hold the No. 1 overall pick, and it’s anticipated that Mendoza’s name will be called. He’ll likely be among the team and family members who have been essential throughout his life.
