On Tuesday, F1 held its first-ever season launch event, with all 10 teams gathering at O2 in London to announce their liver for next season. What is one of the most planned moments of the night? When Lewis Hamilton began walking alongside Ferrari, he made his public debut with Scaudelia.
However, an even bigger public debut for the team came on their Test track on Wednesday. Ferrari placed the 2025 season challenger SF-25 through his pace on the Fiorano team's Test track.
Charles Leclerc was on the truck for the morning session, and Hamilton was scheduled to drive later that day.
Between images released by the team on social media and these videos, you can start diving into the changes Ferrari made for the SF-25.
Switching to pull rod suspension using SF-25
One of the biggest changes? Switching to the SF-25 pull rod front suspension. This is a departure from the pushrod configuration used by the team last season.
What is the difference between push rod and pull rod designs? This 2023 work outlines and relies on the discussion between the two. F1:
The rod that connects the top of the wheel to the torsion spring is called a “pull rod” or “push rod”. That's because the rod can be secured to that spring “pull” or “push”.
In a pull rod configuration, the rod is mounted at an angle from the lower point of the chassis to the higher point of the wheel assembly. When the tires cross the bump, the wheel pulls the torsion spring through the pull rod and pulls the rod upwards from the chassis.
In the pushrod configuration, it is mounted in the opposite way, so it is mounted again at an angle again, but it is higher in the chassis and the wheel assembly is lower. When the tire passes the bump, the wheel pushes the torsion spring through the push rod and pushes the rod upward towards the chassis.
The videos included in the work are worth watching.
In previous seasons such as last year's SF-24, Ferrari used a push-rod configuration. The rods were mounted at a higher point on the chassis and lowered to the wheel assembly. You can see its composition in this photo of Leclerc's SF-24 at the Miami Grand Prix.
Marksco Field
As you can see, in the area highlighted by a red box, you can see the design of the push rod, the rod is higher on top of the chassis and lower on the wheels.
As you can see from now on Images of the SF-25 released by the teamthis season's Challenger has a pull rod design, with the rod attached to the lower point of the chassis, and the wheels have a higher point.
Ferrari explained the reasoning For this switch, which models the configuration used by McLaren and Red Bull:
“There is no doubt that the most visible change launched by the Loic Serra-led team was made in the front suspension, which switched from push rod to pull rod design. The idea behind this change in architecture is It was about improving the scope of further aero development while also improving the airflow around the car.
The side pod will be changed to SF-25
Ferrari's SF-25 also incorporates several changes to the sidepod, some of which began rolling out during the 2024 season. The first is the use of the “overbite” air inlet on the front of the side pod. This is a change from the way the team launched their 2024 campaign with SF-24. Last year, Ferrari began its season with an “under bite” configuration. This can be seen in this image of the 2024 Miami Grand Prix.
However, before Emilia's Romana Grand Prix, Ferrari switched to an over-bite configuration.
Additionally, the side pods themselves are more streamlined, with more channels being cut out into the side pods below the intake.
Additionally, the SF-25 switches to a P-shaped front inlet used by other teams on the grid. This will be replaced with the dual vertical/horizontal configuration used by Ferrari last season.
Changes to the engine cover to the SF-25
Looking at the engine cover of the SF-25, the “Shark Fin” design is less noticeable than the SF-24. The SF-24 also had three air outlets along the engine cover, but Ferrari opted for a single air outlet on the SF-25.
Change floor to SF-25
Finally, the SF-25 has similar floor edge details to how the team finished the 2024 season.
Compare this photo and its image from the 2024 Miami Grand Prix.
Ferrari began updating the edges of the floor to SF-24 in the late stages of the 2024 season. Upgrade packages the team brought to Monza. The SF-25 incorporates many of these changes into the floor edge with the SF-25. These changes to the floor edge were introduced to improve aerodynamics and airflow.
Will these changes work for the SF-25? I'll start receiving these answers next week in pre-season tests.
