Festival-goers injured in ‘terrifying’ crowd surge at Boardmasters in Newquay | UK news

Devon and Cornwall Police said a crowd stampede left concertgoers injured at the Boardmasters music festival in Newquay on Friday, with one woman describing a “terrifying” experience of being caught in a “massive crowd stampede”.

Festival organisers said a planned gig by DJ and producer Sammy Virgi had been cancelled, while police said in a statement that they had been “received reports of a crowd surge at Boardmasters music festival in Newquay on Friday 9 August, resulting in a small number of attendees being injured.”

“The injured are currently being treated by medical staff at the scene or taken to hospital for examination. None of the injuries are believed to be serious. This is an isolated incident and the festival will continue.”

Speaking to PA Media, an attendee said: “My daughter and I were crushed against the fence so I lifted her over the fence and then got myself out. I warned the security again that there was going to be big trouble. Nothing seemed to be done… There were no security guards stopping people.”

Boardmasters said: “We can confirm that Sammy Virge’s show has been cancelled and the Point Stage has been closed to allow on-site teams to respond to an incident in the auditorium.”

“No serious injuries were reported and our pit and medical teams immediately provided medical attention to those involved. Safety is our number one priority and we thank Sammy and the audience for their understanding. All other stages are unaffected and the show will continue as scheduled.”
