Fetterman Praises Dr. Oz for Tackling Medicaid Fraud
Pennsylvania Senator John Fetterman expressed admiration for his former rival, Dr. Mehmet Oz, during a recent interview, highlighting Oz’s dedication to combating fraud in the Medicare and Medicaid systems.
When asked by CBS News journalist Major Garrett whether Oz was performing well in his government role, Fetterman responded, “I think that’s totally appropriate. I mean, that’s — what we’re finding. There’s been a lot of fraud in Medicaid, and now let’s root it out!” He further emphasized the need to address criminal activities, stating his support for immigration reforms while urging a focus on eliminating fraudulent practices within Medicaid.
Fetterman, who defeated Oz in the closely watched 2022 Senate race, often frames his political messaging around a populist, working-class tone. He has frequently portrayed Oz as an out-of-touch celebrity from another state. Notably, Fetterman overcame health challenges, including a stroke, during his campaign to secure a Senate seat that helped maintain the Democratic majority.
As the CMS Administrator, Dr. Oz has indicated there is substantial evidence of Medicaid fraud in New York’s program. He has sent a letter to Governor Kathy Hochul, presenting a series of inquiries about the program and asking for timely responses from state officials.
A spokesperson for Hochul asserted that the governor had been proactive in addressing waste, fraud, and abuse in Medicaid, prior to Trump’s return to the White House. However, they critiqued CMS’s investigation, suggesting it was politically charged.
In their communication, they noted, “Long before the Trump administration took office, Governor Hochul led efforts to root out waste, fraud and abuse… saving taxpayers more than $2 billion while safeguarding home health care for those in need.” They also underscored concerns regarding potential Republican motives to dismantle essential programs that support vulnerable communities.
