Fetterman Commends Oz for Fraud Investigation Efforts

Pennsylvania Senator John Fetterman recently offered a positive assessment of his former rival, Dr. Mehmet Oz, who serves as the Administrator of the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS). During a conversation with CBS News reporter Major Garrett, Fetterman acknowledged Oz’s initiatives to combat fraud within Medicaid.

When Garrett asked if Oz was performing well in his role, Fetterman responded affirmatively, stating, “I think that’s totally appropriate. There’s been a lot of fraud in Medicaid, and now let’s root it out!” He elaborated, drawing a parallel to immigration issues, emphasizing the need to address fraudulent practices. “I’m supportive of Medicaid, but we have to root out all kinds of fraud,” he insisted, expressing a sense of approval for Oz’s focus on these efforts.

Fetterman, who narrowly defeated Oz in the 2022 Senate race—a highly publicized contest—often portrays himself as a champion for the working class, frequently criticizing Oz as an out-of-touch celebrity from outside the state.

Despite his health challenges, Fetterman managed to campaign for the Senate in 2022, ultimately aiding Democrats in retaining their majority. Meanwhile, Oz has been active in investigating New York’s Medicaid program, claiming there is substantial evidence of fraud present.

Earlier this month, Oz reached out to New York Governor Kathy Hochul, sending her a list of 50 questions regarding the Medicaid program and requesting information within a 30-day timeframe. His approach seems to signal a serious inquiry into the alleged fraudulent activities.

A spokesperson for Gov. Hochul defended the state’s actions, noting that efforts to combat waste and fraud started long before the Trump administration took over. According to the spokesperson, these initiatives had successfully saved taxpayers billions while ensuring care for vulnerable populations. However, they also suggested that the investigation by CMS could have political motivations.

“But we want to be clear about the real goal of Donald Trump and Washington Republicans: to eliminate programs that help our most vulnerable people and take health care away from everyday New Yorkers,” the spokesperson concluded.
