Fetterman Could As Well Join the Republican Party After Latest Poll

Fetterman’s Unconventional Standing in Pennsylvania Politics

A recent poll indicates that Senator John Fetterman, a Democrat from Pennsylvania, often finds himself at odds with his own party. Known for his self-described “progressive” stance during his 2022 Senate campaign, Fetterman has expressed strong opinions on issues like foreign policy and immigration, sometimes diverging from mainstream Democratic views.

Interestingly, while Fetterman’s approval ratings are lower among Democrats—41% overall with 37% disapproving—he seems to be gaining traction with Republican voters. According to Susquehanna’s research, his approval rating among Republicans sits at 45%, which is actually five points higher than among his own party members.

Looking deeper, 39% of Democrats disapprove of his performance, compared to 37% of Republicans. A notable 22% of respondents remained neutral on their opinion of Fetterman.

James Lee, president of Polling and Research at Susquehanna, commented on the situation, suggesting that if this trend continues, Fetterman might want to consider a party switch. “It’s tough to predict how he’ll fare in the upcoming election, which is still a couple of years away, but his main vulnerability seems to be within the Democratic primary,” he noted.

Adding to the complexity, James Merkley, the Republican Communications Director in Pennsylvania, stated that the acceptance of Fetterman by Republicans highlights the current divide within the Democratic Party, burdened by what he labeled as elitism and rigidity among coastal advocates.

The poll results also reveal geographical disparities in Fetterman’s support. In the heavily Democratic areas like Philadelphia, only 43% of respondents approve of him, while 48% disapprove. Conversely, in more conservative regions across central and northern Pennsylvania, his numbers show 41% approval against 33% disapproval.

Fetterman has remained vocal about key issues, advocating for Israel and expressing a strong position against Iran’s nuclear ambitions. He has also criticized violence linked to certain protests, even implying that some members of the Democratic Party failed to acknowledge such incidents outright.

Interestingly, Fetterman has called for more bipartisan dialogue, stating he’s open to diplomacy, even expressing that his interaction with former President Trump at Mar-a-Lago was a “positive experience.”

However, Fetterman’s road isn’t entirely smooth. He has faced significant health challenges since suffering a stroke in 2022 and has been candid about his ongoing struggles with depression and anxiety.

With his term running until 2029, there’s a growing sentiment that he could face difficulties in upcoming primaries. Pittsburgh Democratic strategist Mike Mix noted that Fetterman’s behavior, including his approach toward Trump, could damage his public image. “If he faces any viable opponent, it’s nearly certain he could find himself in a tough spot,” Mix remarked.

The Susquehanna poll carried a margin of error of 3.7%, based on feedback from over 700 participants.

As of now, Fetterman’s office has not commented on these findings.
