Fetterman Critiques Senate Democrats Over DHS Funding Vote

Senator John Fetterman (D-Pennsylvania), the only Democrat in the Senate to side with Republicans on funding the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), expressed disappointment in his colleagues for prioritizing party loyalty over national interest during a recent closed vote.

On Thursday, Senate Democrats voted against funding DHS. This decision followed the tragic shooting deaths of immigration officers Alex Preti and Renee Nicole Goode in Minnesota. Some Democrats aimed to push for strict reforms at Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).

Yet, Fetterman believes Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) and the party are missing a critical aspect of the issue.

Government Shutdown Looms

“This shutdown literally has no impact on the functioning of ICE,” he stated in a post on X. He added that the shutdown could harm other essential services like the TSA, FEMA, and the Coast Guard. Fetterman argued that a democracy should seek to reform ICE without jeopardizing vital national security functions.

The failure to reach an agreement means a partial government shutdown that only affects DHS is now unavoidable. The deadline to reach a deal is late Friday night, but it seems quite unlikely.

This is compounded by the fact that many senators left Washington, D.C., en masse for the Munich Security Conference, leaving little time for negotiations.

What the Shutdown Means

Democrats assert that the White House and Republicans are not genuinely committed to reforming ICE and Customs and Border Protection (CBP). Schumer and his colleagues argue that the proposals from Republicans aren’t substantial enough to warrant their support.

However, Fetterman points out that a DHS shutdown won’t halt the funding for immigration services. Congressional Republicans allocated approximately $75 billion to ICE last year as part of a major reform package. This funding will be spread over four years, so a shutdown at this point will have minimal effects on ICE’s core operations.

Impacts of the Shutdown

Despite this, other agencies under DHS, like TSA, FEMA, and the Coast Guard, would feel the repercussions of the shutdown significantly.

Negotiations are expected to carry on behind the scenes, with Senate Democrats hinting at the possibility of presenting a counter-proposal to the White House regarding funding. Nevertheless, any vote to reopen and fund government operations may not occur until early next week at the earliest.
