Fetterman Responds to Criticism Over Government Shutdown
Senator John Fetterman (D-Pa.) expressed on ABC’s “The View” that he’s not interested in receiving feedback from what he termed “radical” Democrats regarding a potential government shutdown.
Co-host Sunny Hostin pointed out various criticisms of the vote, mentioning Bernie Sanders’ view of it as a significant error and Gavin Newsom describing it as pathetic and a surrender. Hostin noted that polls indicate public discontent with Republicans from both political sides, even citing Marjorie Taylor Greene’s criticism of her own party. “The Democrats had a significant victory; why back down now?” she questioned. Additionally, she raised concerns about whether Republicans would engage sincerely in health care negotiations if the government were to reopen, emphasizing the potential consequences for 500,000 Pennsylvanians who could face rising health care costs.
Fetterman responded, saying, “Honestly, MTG is pretty much the last person whose advice I would take. It’s bewildering to see Democrats championing such extremes. If they want to, that’s on them. I don’t need a lecture from figures like Bernie Sanders or the California governor, as their constituencies are quite different from mine, leaning heavily to the left with some radical elements.”
He continued, “What we truly need is to focus on the interests of Pennsylvania and similar states. It’s important to remember the stakes that were involved in last year’s election—the sacrifices made then must not be forgotten. I think it’s crucial to address the extremism without looking back. I want to forge a path forward. Instead of quoting MTG, I’d prefer to highlight that my election does not justify continued shutdowns. Many see it that way, especially with people having gone without paychecks for weeks and millions of Americans now uncertain about their next meal. They are borrowing heavily just to meet basic expenses.”
