Pennsylvania’s Democratic Senator John Fetterman is set to continue in his role despite a report questioning his capability to serve.
The report, published by New York Magazine’s Intelligencer, includes insights from both former and current aides expressing their concerns regarding Fetterman’s actions and decision-making.
It characterizes him as “a volatile senator whose mental health challenges are increasingly difficult to manage and more serious than initially understood.”
Following a stroke in May 2022, Fetterman maintains that “he is healthy,” yet former staff members feel he has changed fundamentally from the person they once knew.
In response to the report, some Democrats in Pennsylvania dismissed it as a biased take that relies on anonymous sources. NBC reporter Kate Santalis mentioned this reaction on Tuesday.
Fetterman himself remarked, “This is one source story with anonymous sources, a hit piece from a very left publication,” addressing concerns brought up by an ex-chief aide.
Although critics suggest Fetterman has lost his edge, he pointed out that the narrative often notes his relationship with Trump, questioning how much of that is influenced by mental health.
“While no one asserts that my controversial views relate directly to my mental health, it’s becoming more challenging to distinguish between them,” he noted.
When asked about his re-election plans during a CNN interview, Fetterman assured that his treatment for depression is well-understood.
“We’re not discussing ’28,” he said, suggesting clear awareness of future political landscapes.
Concerns from former aide Adam Gentleson echo throughout, indicating that working with Pennsylvania Democrats has grown nearly impossible.
Regardless, Fetterman confidently stated that his mental health does not impair his role as a senator, labeling any assertions to the contrary as “outrageous.”
“My doctor confirmed that isn’t true,” he said. “I’ve been open about my depression, and it feels like someone is trying to misuse my medical details as part of this smear campaign.”
Even with Gentleson’s revelations, Fetterman criticized the approach, stating, “If there’s real concern, why not talk to me directly instead of going to the media?”
Interestingly, Fetterman’s vocal support for Israel during the ongoing Hamas-Israel conflict, coupled with his attitude towards Trump, may have prompted heightened dissent within his party.
Modern Democrats appear to have shifted towards a more radical stance on various issues compared to previous decades.
