Sen. John Fetterman, D-Pennsylvania, said Sunday that the indictment against North Carolina Republican gubernatorial candidate Mark Robinson was “great news” for Democrats.
Appearing on MSNBC's “Meet the Press,” Fetterman was asked by host Kristen Welker about former President Trump's endorsement of Robinson and whether it's fair to judge candidates based on who voters support.
CNN published a report accusing the sitting lieutenant governor of making a number of offensive comments on a pornographic website more than a decade ago.
“Obviously, this is great news for Democrats,” Fetterman said. “Indeed, Robinson is an ideal new candidate to run against.”
Robinson is currently trailing her Democratic opponent, state Attorney General Josh Stein (D), but the reports could help Stein widen her lead.
North Carolina Republicans continue to defend Robinson despite the allegations, which he denies.
Before the report was released, speculation about the contents of the article led some to wonder if Robinson might withdraw from the race, especially as states have begun mailing out ballots.
Despite his attempts to distance himself, Trump has not retracted his support for Robinson. Fetterman said Trump has no plans to “rescind” his support because he doesn't want to acknowledge the “catastrophe.”
Fetterman said he was “pleased to know” the report would solidify Stein's chances of victory and improve Vice President Harris' chances of victory in North Carolina.
“She's already made North Carolina a competitive team, and now with Robinson on the team, we're in a great situation to win,” he said.
