Senator Fetterman Warns of Leaving Democratic Party

U.S. Senator John Fetterman has indicated that he would consider leaving the Democratic Party if it officially adopts an anti-Israel stance. This revelation came during an interview with NBC News.

Fetterman, who is known for his tendency to break with party lines, shared what he views as a pivotal issue that could lead him to exit the already fragmented party.

“I’ve been frustrated with the way the Democratic party continues to turn its back on Israel. I mean that’s old news honestly,” he remarked during an interview on Capitol Hill.

When probed about the party’s stance and its implications for his affiliation, he stated that if the Democratic platform includes “no aid for Israel,” he would consider his options. “If the Democrats officially become the ‘anti-Israel party,’ then yeah, that’s a red line for me,” he emphasized.

“I’m always proud to stand with Israel,” he added.

Fetterman’s statements come on the heels of over 100 House Democrats backing a proposal from Thomas Massie (R-Ky.) to suspend U.S. aid to Israel, a move that received significant pushback from most GOP senators. This legislative attempt has exacerbated the existing tensions within the Democratic Party, prompting Fetterman’s comments.

Despite his criticisms of the party, he has not specified which other party he might join or if he would opt for becoming an independent.

Recent polling by Quinnipiac indicates that Fetterman’s approval rating among Pennsylvania Democrats has plummeted to 19%, posing a considerable challenge should he decide to seek re-election in 2028.

Interestingly, the poll also reflected his increasing popularity among Republicans, showing a 77% approval rating in that demographic. However, it’s uncertain whether this support would translate into actual votes during elections, as noted by NBC News.
