Indiana Fever’s Sophie Cunningham Addresses Team Challenges
Sophie Cunningham, a guard for the Indiana Fever, recently spoke out regarding the team’s struggles, particularly in light of Kate Rinklerk’s injuries. She emphasized the importance of not letting these setbacks define their season. After defeating the Dallas Wings, Cunningham shared insights about how the entire league faces similar challenges.
Reflecting on the season so far, she noted, “We’ve had a lot of distractions. Injuries, unpredictable line-ups… it’s all a bit overwhelming. But perhaps this isn’t entirely a bad thing. I think going through adversity early can be a benefit.” In her view, there’s a silver lining: “It’s not an excuse at all. Everyone is grappling with tough schedules, and that just means we have to rise to the occasion more.”
Cunningham also touched upon the camaraderie within the team, indicating that they rely heavily on each other during this phase. “We’re all aware of how tough it’s been. But in the locker room, it’s just us. This is our moment to improve.”
In the recent game against the Wings, Cunningham tallied five points and four assists, contributing to the Fever’s 94-86 victory. Despite the win, Cunningham commented on the increasing tension around the league due to scheduling issues. For example, Breana Stewart from the New York Liberty voiced her concerns earlier this month, suggesting that the 44-game schedule might be overwhelming: “We want to play, and it looks great with sold-out arenas, but the volume is a lot.”
Finally, Cunningham did express a desire for changes moving forward, especially regarding scheduling: “I understand the logistics between April and October, but it’s vital we figure out how to avoid those intense stretches of games.”
