Americans in the new poll said they are not confident in their handling of President Trump's economy amid his administration's expansion of escalation in his trade war through radical changes to import and export regulations.
CBS News Vote Fifty-two percent of Americans surveyed said they disapproved of Trump's handling of the economy, while 49 percent said they had approved it. 56% also said they disapproved Trump's handling of inflation, while 44% said they approved it.
Most respondents said Trump's focus was on the wrong issues, with 55% saying the president focused on tariffs as “too much” while 38% said he was focusing on the “right amount.” Only 7% of respondents said he did not give tariffs as a sufficient focus.
The poll comes after the latest announcement on Trump's latest tariffs on foreign-made cars and auto parts. Last week, Trump announced it was imposing a 25% tariff on imports of foreign-made vehicles.
On Wednesday, Trump is expected to lay out mutual tariffs on American trading partners.
Most Americans who voted for it said Trump wanted to focus more on price cuts, with 64% in polls saying they don't have enough focus on the issue. 31% said the president was focusing on the “right amount” to cut prices, while only 5% said he was focusing on “too much.”
But many Americans are denounceing former President Biden for inflation today. When asked who policy is more responsible for current inflation rates, 38% stated Biden's policy, and 34% stated that it was according to Trump's policy. 19% said they denounced both administrations equally, while 9% said they were not responsible.
Despite Americans' critical views on the economy under Trump, many people praised the current administration's handling of immigrants, with 56% saying they approving how it is being handled, and 44% say they are seeking disapproval.
The CBS News poll was conducted on 2,609 US adults interviewed March 27-28 with an error of 2.3 percentage points.
