A Guatemalan immigrant accused of setting fire to a sleeping F train passenger and watching him burn to death entered the country illegally after being deported and later stayed in a New York City shelter, sources say. Sources confirmed this to the Post.
He first entered the U.S. at the Arizona border in 2018, but was arrested days later for illegal entry and deported, people told the Post.
He then evaded U.S. authorities and re-entered the United States on an unknown date. It is unknown how long he has been in New York.
But law enforcement officials said he had been staying in multiple taxpayer-funded immigrant shelters in the city.
Officials say he gave the address of the Randall Island shelter when he was issued a traffic ticket in 2023.
