FIFA Ruling on Balogun’s Suspension
FIFA officials have deemed Belgium’s appeal regarding the overturning of American soccer star Folarin Balogun’s one-match suspension as “inadmissible.” This decision means Balogun can participate in tonight’s important World Cup match.
Just hours ahead of the game, FIFA dismissed Belgium’s efforts to keep the U.S. leading scorer sidelined. The officials determined that the Belgian team was not involved in the original suspension or its reversal, leaving them without the grounds to appeal.
“The FIFA Appeals Committee has decided that the request submitted by the Royal Belgian Football Association (RBFA) cannot be accepted,” FIFA stated, as reported by various media outlets.
The committee explained that the RBFA did not have a stake in the proceedings and thus lacked the standing to challenge the decision.
Interestingly, although the appeal was turned down, the Belgian side is still disputing the ruling, arguing that FIFA violated its own regulations pertaining to appeals.
The RBFA contends that FIFA’s actions prevented access to necessary grounds and documents relevant to lifting Balogun’s suspension.
“Up to now, we haven’t received an explanation for this decision, nor have we been provided with the information we requested from the start of this procedure,” the Belgian football authority said in a statement.
They further asserted, “For an appeal to succeed, FIFA’s regulations require a reasoned decision to be provided first to the appellant.”
They argued that the RBFA was just seeking a fair explanation, but felt FIFA set up an appeal process that was immediately dismissed as inadmissible.
“This occurred while FIFA simultaneously disregarded the RBFA’s legitimate requests,” the statement continued.
“Regardless of the outcome of tonight’s match, the RBFA is profoundly concerned about these developments and will continue to strive for the fundamental principles of ethics, fair competition, and the overall interests of football,” they added.
In another vein, FIFA President Gianni Infantino faced accusations of swaying President Donald Trump’s decision to lift Balogun’s suspension. However, Infantino firmly denies these claims.
Infantino noted that Trump had reached out regarding the disciplinary action taken against Balogun, but he emphasized that he did not intervene in the processes of FIFA’s independent judicial body.
“FIFA’s judicial body operates independently and makes decisions based on its regulations,” Infantino explained.
He acknowledged his discussions with various world leaders about World Cup issues but clarified that he described the ongoing legal proceedings to Trump as well.
Meanwhile, President Trump corroborated that he contacted Infantino to express his disapproval of Balogun’s earlier suspension.
During a White House briefing, Trump strongly rejected the call that led to Balogun’s dismissal from the match.
“That wasn’t a foul. It wasn’t even a violation. It was two guys running at full speed, colliding by chance,” Trump stated.
He critiqued the referee’s decisions, suggesting they were questionable based on past performance. In fact, the referee who dealt the red card to Balogun is Rafael Klaus from Brazil, who has faced allegations of match-fixing earlier this year.
