Recent video captured the uproar in an Ohio courtroom where two families clashed after a judge gave a lighter sentence to a young man involved in a fatal shooting. It all unfolded in Hamilton County when Latrell Rogers, just 20 years old, pleaded guilty to manslaughter for the death of 17-year-old Edwin “Maisel” Arrington and received a sentence of between 12 and 17.5 years in prison.
According to reports, chaos ensued almost immediately after the plea was announced. Footage showed Rogers’ family expressing their affection as he was led out of the courtroom, while Arrington’s relatives reacted with anger, shouting unsavory remarks in return.
As tensions escalated, the confrontation spilled into the hallway, prompting court staff and attorneys to stand up and rush to intervene. Judge Christopher McDowell later noted that the noise was disruptive enough to interfere with the proceedings.
Multiple people ended up being arrested for disorderly conduct, leading to a temporary closure of the Cincinnati courthouse, which frustrated jurors who had to dismiss their cases that morning.
The Hamilton County Sheriff’s Office reported that charges were filed against three individuals and a juvenile, set to appear in court to address the matter.
Arrington’s mother, Shamika, expressed her deep frustration with the light sentence handed to her son’s killer. She described the horrific scene of her son being shot in the back while fleeing and the unbearable pain of knowing he died alone. “My son was left dead in the cold for four hours,” she lamented. “This man will get to go home, while our family will grieve our son every holiday and birthday.”
Initially, before the plea deal, Rogers faced the possibility of a life sentence for shooting Arrington multiple times in Cincinnati’s University Heights neighborhood on January 1, 2024. He was arrested more than four months later and charged with murder and assault.
