Starbucks is set to close a number of its locations in California, with 64 shops across the state expected to shut down.
The closures are spread throughout the state, from Santa Rosa down to San Diego, impacting areas like the Bay Area, Sacramento, the Central Coast, Los Angeles, and Orange County, among others.
Reports indicate that a review of locations was conducted using the Starbucks app and the company’s store locator. This led to the discovery that many California shops were not listing operating hours beyond the current week.
The list of the 64 affected locations comes from a dedicated Starbucks enthusiast, known as Winter, who has made it his mission to visit all Starbucks globally. He used the app for his findings.
As of now, Starbucks has not confirmed the specific locations that will close.
This closure represents about 2.1% of all Starbucks locations in California, and while there is concern regarding potential layoffs, the company intends to reassign employees to nearby stores instead.
Starbucks has indicated that signage will be displayed at closing locations this weekend to inform customers.

This move is part of a broader strategy by Starbucks’ CEO, Brian Niccol, known as “Back to Starbucks,” which began in 2024. In a communication to employees, COO Mike Grams noted that the company pinpointed locations where it struggled to provide the desired customer experience or financial results.
Overall, Starbucks intends to close a total of 250 stores across North America in the near future. This accounts for about 1% of its locations in the region.
To facilitate these changes, Starbucks is incurring a $300 million restructuring charge and plans to invest $1 billion into renovation efforts. The company aims to enhance and upgrade approximately 1,500 North American stores by the end of September.
