Finland’s national airline Finnair will reportedly start weighing passengers along with their carry-on baggage to estimate the weight of planes before takeoff.
Finnair told reporters that it started implementing the new policy this Monday.
“More than 500 volunteer customers have participated in the weigh-in so far,” said spokeswoman Kaisa Tikkanen.
Finnair said it wanted to know the exact weight of the aircraft and passengers for safety reasons. The airline assured passengers that no data would be leaked.
Satu Munukka, Finnair’s head of ground processes, said: “Only the customer service personnel working at the measurement point can confirm the total weight, so they can participate in the survey with confidence.”
Some social media users felt the plan was “cruel” and feared it could lead to fat shaming for overweight passengers.every daily mail:
For some, the news means they won’t be flying Finnair for the foreseeable future, while others have hailed the plan as “a way to solve the obesity crisis”. One user slammed Finnair, saying he wouldn’t fly on Finnair because “I don’t want to get fat and be shamed by a bloody airline”, adding that he wouldn’t weigh himself out of choice. Ta.
Another furious user said: “Will Finnair start weighing passengers?” Did I read that correctly? I’m totally shocked! And I was fed up. Some went so far as to describe the move as “draconian”, with one user posting: “Finnair’s metering rules are not about passenger safety.” No plane has ever crashed because a passenger was overweight. This is a strict law and a nanny state. ”
Just last year, Korean Air, the country’s largest airline, announced it would start weighing passengers on domestic flights at Gimpo Airport.
