Fire at Searsmont, Maine lumber mill leads to action from Gov. Janet Mills

Investigations are underway following an explosion at a sawmill in Searsmont, Maine, which occurred on Friday. So far, officials have not provided details regarding the number of injuries or fatalities.

The Camden Fire and Rescue Service confirmed their crews are on-site assisting in the response efforts. “Our thoughts are with those hurt and the medical teams working diligently, as well as the first responders trying to manage the situation,” they stated on Facebook, adding they would have personnel available for several days.

Ben Hamel, the purchasing manager at the mill, mentioned that the fire originated in an area where wood chips are packed, later spreading to a nearby dust silo that exploded. However, the specific cause of the fire remains unclear.

Witnesses reported hearing of a “massive fuel leak,” prompting police to advise people to evacuate the vicinity.

Maine Governor Janet Mills communicated on social media that she has been updated on the incident. “I urge everyone to stay away from the area, heed law enforcement instructions, and let emergency teams do their work. Please keep all those affected in your thoughts,” she said.

Representative Jared Golden from Maine expressed his concerns as well, saying, “We pray for the safety and well-being of the first responders and everyone present.” He encouraged locals to follow law enforcement guidance and consult trusted sources for updates.

Searsmont, a small town, is located about an hour and a half northeast of Portland and roughly four hours north of Boston.

This is an evolving story, and updates will be provided as more information becomes available.
