Members of a significant federal vaccine advisory committee, which was unexpectedly dismissed earlier this month, expressed that recent decisions made by the Trump administration have “critically weakened” the US vaccine program and compromised years of effective vaccination policies.
A former member of the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices for the CDC discussed the situation in a personal address linked to a publication in the JAMA Medical Journal, focusing on the recent actions of Robert F. Kennedy Jr.
Kennedy announced that all 17 members of the ACIP were removed, claiming that “a clean sweep is needed to restore public confidence in vaccine science.” However, those who were let go have rebutted this narrative.
According to them, “Health Providers and US Public Trust ACIP.” Data from a national vaccination survey over the past 18 years indicates that 99 out of 100 children in the US have received at least some recommended vaccines by age two. This aligns with the acceptance of ACIP recommendations made by trusted healthcare providers.
They also mentioned that this doesn’t imply that the vaccines will completely overthrow the established processes, as there are concerns regarding fidelity to the norms.
The committee members noted that all meetings and agendas were transparent, potential conflicts of interest were routinely assessed, and public input was considered during their proceedings.
On June 9, 2025, just two days after the appointments, eight new ACIP members were selected, and cuts to CDC staff focused on vaccination have significantly weakened the US vaccine program. “These actions have stripped us of the institutional knowledge and continuity that have been crucial for success over the years,” they explained.
The new members, chosen by Kennedy, are known figures who have opposed Covid-19 measures and spread misinformation concerning vaccines.
In addition to their termination, the previous 17 members highlighted the shifts Kennedy made regarding his Covid-19 vaccine policies.
