The union that represents members of the FDNY has endorsed former Governor Andrew Cuomo for the upcoming mayoral race. This backing comes just weeks ahead of the Democratic primary, where labor support can make a significant impact.
Cuomo has gained endorsements from various labor groups, including the ambulance union, as well as the uniformed firefighters and their officers.
UFA president Andrew Ansbro emphasized Cuomo’s commitment to the welfare, safety, and dignity of New York’s firefighters and first responders. During the COVID-19 pandemic, Ansbro noted that Cuomo prioritized emergency services and ensured they had access to PPE long before federal assistance arrived. Furthermore, he highlighted Cuomo’s efforts in advocating for protections for 9/11 responders and their families.
Interestingly, while praise for Cuomo’s handling of the pandemic contrasts sharply with the significant criticisms he faced during that time, particularly related to the discharge of patients from hospitals in March 2020, the unions have chosen to focus on the positives. UFOA President James Brosi underscored Cuomo’s dedication to maintaining the integrity of the civil service and safeguarding pensions.
As challenges like increased zoning and growing population density place additional demands on resources, Brosi argued that Cuomo is committed to expanding public safety personnel and infrastructure to ensure New York remains a livable and safe city for all residents.
Cuomo has made it clear that he stands firm with FDNY and the courageous individuals who serve in it. He stated, “Being a firefighter is not just a job; it’s a calling.” Cuomo expressed admiration for the bravery of FDNY personnel, who face risks daily to protect lives.
He reflected on the sacrifices of the 343 firefighters who responded to the 9/11 attacks, as well as those who later suffered health issues from exposure to toxic smoke. “I will never forget their sacrifices,” Cuomo remarked, vowing to ensure that these heroes receive the resources they need from every branch of government.
Despite his resignation as governor amidst various sexual misconduct allegations—which he has consistently denied—Cuomo is emerging as a strong candidate in the mayoral primary. His support from various trade unions, such as the Teamsters and the Healthcare Workers 1199 SEIU, gives him an edge over his competitors.
The UFA, representing around 20,000 firefighters, had previously endorsed Andrew Yang during the 2021 primary and is now backing Mayor Eric Adams. Meanwhile, the UFOA, which has 7,500 members, includes a range of roles from firefighters to battalion chiefs.
