Fishermen in Alaska locate possible balloon debris

The FBI is investigating debris that may have been tied to a balloon found by fishermen off the coast of Alaska on Friday.

Reports of the debris began to circulate Friday night. CNN reported Some officials believe it may have come from a surveillance balloon. A commercial fishing vessel is expected to bring the debris to shore sometime this weekend to allow for further investigation. ABC report.

The FBI confirmed the discovery to The Hill, but declined to identify the possible source.

“The FBI is aware of wreckage discovered off the coast of Alaska by a commercial fishing vessel,” the bureau said in a statement. “We will continue to work with our partners to assist with the logistics of debris recovery.”

Details are limited at this time.

The incident occurred more than a year after American warplanes launched Chinese surveillance balloons from the skies off the coast of the Carolinas.

Another balloon made recent headlines last month when it was spotted flying over the Midwest, but upon intercepting it, authorities determined it was likely a “hobby balloon.”
