A group of fishermen recently celebrated an impressive catch — a blue marlin weighing 648 pounds.
At the helm was Captain Alec Stockfelt, who, along with his crew, landed this massive fish while fishing off the coast of San Diego. It’s surprising to think that this catch weighed about the same as a full-grown male grizzly bear, and it set a record for the largest fish ever weighed at Fishermen’s Landing in San Diego. Stockfelt estimates that the previous record stood around 598 pounds.
The crew was on their 65-foot boat when the record-breaking marlin was caught about 40 miles offshore on a Monday. It took a team effort to hoist the marlin onto the boat due to its sheer size.
Interestingly, just about a week earlier, two fishermen in San Diego had caught a 500-pound bluefin tuna that was poised to break records. However, it wasn’t eligible for the books since it was caught commercially. Only catches made during sport fishing qualify for those records.
While the tuna could have set a new state record, Stockfelt’s marlin overshadows it by a hefty margin of nearly 150 pounds.
This fishing season might be particularly memorable, as reports suggest that El Niño weather patterns are leading to an influx of exotic sea creatures, according to insights from a local market owner.
