A spokesperson from Customs and Border Protection (CBP) announced on Tuesday that five individuals from Iran were apprehended while attempting to cross the US border illegally from Canada.
According to CBP’s Swanton Sector, agents responded to suspicious activity near Moore’s Fork in Champlain, New York, on July 1st. They discovered a minivan occupied by five Iranian citizens and two individuals from Uzbekistan.
Champlain Station is within the Swanton sector, located in a rural area of Vermont just south of Highway 89 and the Canadian border.
All seven men involved—previously arrested for similar offenses—are now in custody awaiting deportation. CBP stated, “They are currently detained, and their removal is pending. Border security is tied closely to national security and public safety, so our agents are dedicated to upholding immigration laws.”
Earlier this month, counterterrorism experts shared concerns that there could be concealed Iranian sleeper cells in the US. This surge of worry follows the US military’s airstrikes on several Iranian nuclear sites on June 22.
Jonathan Gilliam, a former special FBI agent, remarked, “The scariest part is knowing these sleeper cells might not be easy to spot. Our experiences over recent years show that people can cross into the US more easily now.”
Gilliam also noted the Biden administration’s approach to border security, highlighting potential vulnerabilities. He mentioned the possibility of individuals seeking asylum or refuge being placed in protective housing, which raises further questions about their status.
The State Department’s terrorist report from December 2023 underscored disturbing behaviors among Iranian nationals in the West, citing several incidents including charges against three Iranians in a conspiracy to assassinate Iranian opposition figures in New York City. Another case involved a British court convicting an individual for gathering intelligence for a media organization critical of Iran.
In recent years, several European countries, including Albania and Denmark, have taken action against Iranian officials involved in various terrorist conspiracies, underscoring a troubling pattern of Iranian influence overseas.
