SARAJEVO — Five people have been trapped in a cave in southwestern Slovenia since Saturday afternoon. Rising water levels caused by heavy rains have made it impossible for rescue teams to safely extricate him, local media reported on Sunday.
The group, which includes a family of three and two tourist guides, is reportedly sheltered in a safe location in the 8.2-kilometer (5-mile) long Krizna Jama cave, which can only be visited by boat.
Rescuers briefly reached the group on Saturday evening and delivered food, water and heated tents, a local civil protection official told reporters on Sunday.
But because the group was more than 2 kilometers from the cave entrance, officials said it would be three to four hours before a new team of divers arrived, and the final rescue would depend on when water levels rise. The STA news agency reported in the fall, adding that a decision would be made.
It could be Sunday night, but it could also be several days.
Križna Jam is a chain of underground lakes with emerald green water and is the fourth largest known cave ecosystem in the world in terms of biodiversity.
